Lettice Sandford was one of the group of English wood engravers of the golden age of fine press printing - the nineteen twenties and thirties. She and her husband, Christopher Sandford, established the Boar's Head Press to publish volumes of his poetry and her wood engravings. Subsequently, they collaborated on the books produced by the Golden Hours Press. One of these Marlowe's "Hero and Leander" contains some of Lettice Sandford's finest engravings. The wood engraving produced here was the frontispiece for this work. It is printed from the original woodblock.
