| Stanley Strauss: "This project started with a visit to the Pasadena Rose Bowl monthly Flea Market, where I purchased a bag of wooden spools. I had no idea what I would do with them, but my motto has always been, 'You can make a book out of anything.' So, the challenge was set. Several months later I decided I wanted to do a large sewing project, and when I looked at spools again, Little Dorrit popped into my mind." |

Stanley Strauss: "Charles Dickens' 1855-57 novel Little Dorrit depicts life in debtors' prison, the effects of the lack of money and the return of fortune, and the absurdity of governmental bureaucracy. The protagonist, Amy Dorrit, works secretly as a seamstress to support her father and herself while living in Marshallsea prison. The novel is divided into two parts: Poverty and Riches.
"Because of his love for Amy, one of the major characters, Arthur Clennam, attempts to restore her family's fortune by seeing information at the Circumlocution Office, where everyone gets the run-around, literally. This version of Poverty (Part the First) is a representation of that Office. The box is designed to be very tight, reflecting the difficulty of entering the bureaucratic world."

Stanley Strauss: "Charles Dickens' 1855-57 novel Little Dorrit depicts life in debtors' prison, the effects of the lack of money and the return of fortune, and the absurdity of governmental bureaucracy. The protagonist, Amy Dorrit, works unbeknownst to her father as a seamstress to support them while living in Marshallsea prison. The novel is divided into two parts: Poverty and Riches.
"The first part of the novel is Amy Dorrit's story, so I used the spools and threads to represent her life in debtors' prison. Rather than make a clamshell box, the spools act as the walls of the case, suggesting that, while her sewing was a way of providing for her family, it was also a prison in itself. Because Amy tried to make her life as pleasant as possible, the colors of the threads used here are brighter and more varied than in Riches (Part the Second)."
