Pumping Iron
By Kerri Cushman
Chicago: Keri Cushman, 2003. Edition of 13.
10 x 12 x 6” closed. A poem, letterpress printed on handmade blue jean paper, is (in essence) bound into an iron with a plexiglass bottom, which sits in hand-welded lunchbox.
This piece was inspired by Cushman’s years of teaching in a blue color town in Wisconsin. She is interested in the work ethic and how that affects our routine and daily lives. Here we catch a glimpse of a couple preparing for the work day. The ritual begins: “Every morning she brews a pot of coffee. Every morning he greets the spoon and cereal bowl.”

11.25 x 5 x 4.25" accordion resembling a hand concertina. Three letter folded pull out pages. Text and photographs letterpress printed on handmade paper using a Vandercook 4. Duotone images printed onto watermarked cotton/abaca paper using flexible, liquid polymer plates. Other printmaking processes include linocut, handset type, and xerox transfer. Handmade, dyed Kozo paper encapsulates postcard inclusions. Metal letter holders fashioned for accordion interior. Leather handles slide allowing access to exterior boxes. Kerri Cushman: "Venetian Restaurant is a metaphorical cafe designed to feed the soul as one floats down narrow canals of life. Sit back, smile at the sun and enjoy the ride. One can faintly hear the accordion play as the waiter, a carrier pigeon, drops love letters onto your lap. A napkin, letter openener, pen, and postcards are conveniently located in the sliding box compartment. For dessert you may wish to lick a timeless, letterpress printed vanilla flavored stamp. Digest the poetic feast with 'one hundred and fifteen islands hop scotched below your feet'. "
