Panthers
By Michael Dennis Browne
Minneapolis, Minnesota: Indulgence Press, 2007. Edition of 125.

4.5 x 6.5 x 1"; 60 pages. Printed letterpress with inkjet printed photographs on Moab Entrada paper set in Filosofia and Reykjavik type. Hard bound in cloth. Housed in a dark grey Italian cloth-covered slipcase. Printing, photographic illustrations and binding by Chip Schilling.

Indulgence Press: "Panthers contains 31 previously unpublished poems by the acclaimed poet, Michael Dennis Browne. The poems are brief and act as suggestions for larger thoughts brought by the reader. The poet suggests that the poems are best read while in a hypnogogic or hypnopompic state of mind, while entering or waking from sleep, when one is most imaginative and contemplative.

"Brown is also a librettist and lyricist and it is his work in writing for music that inspired the design of Panthers. As well as a book artist and bibliophile, Chip Schilling harbors a deep love of music. Therefore, the idea of using the book structure as a composition around the text, to float the poems along in the way a musical composition lifts its lyrics, defined the pages of the book. The design reflects a musical quality through the placement and flow of the poems and photographs on the page.

"Ample 'white' space is provided around each poem, acting like a melody around a lyric. The text shifts from horizontal on one page to vertical on the next. The reader must physically turn the action creates a rhythm for the reader that is physical in the same way one can be physically moved while listening to music."

Bartleby the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street
By Herman Melville
1995. Edition of 126.

12 x 6", 56 pages. A kallitype print and hand lettering by Suzanne Moore. Edition consists of 26 deluxe copies and 100 standard. This is a standard copy bound in a sew-boards binding under the instruction of Daniel Kelm at the Wide Awake Garage in Easthampton, Massachusetts.

This book, the first letterpress edition by Indulgence Press, began as an MFA thesis project at The University of the Arts. Chip Schilling cast the Bulmer type using a monotype keyboard and casting machine with the assistance of Kent Kasuboske at Clearing Press in Philadelphia. Suzanne Moore created the original lettering in the period style of a 19th century legal script that was then printed from photopolymer plates. The frontispiece photograph is a kallitype print by Chip Schilling, exposed on Kitakata paper. The end papers were handmade by MacGregor & Vinzani in Whiting, Maine. Chip Schilling printed the deluxe edition on handmade Blue Grey Ledger paper, also by MacGregor & Vinzani. The standard edition was printed on Arches MBM mould-made paper. The books were printed by Chip Schilling from January to March 1995 at Janus Press in West Burke, Vermont.

Melville’s enigmatic story is well served by the restrained elegance of Moore’s lettering and the upfront precision of Shilling’s presswork.

A Reminder
By Wilber Schilling
1993. Edition of 700.

12 x 2", 47 pages, accordion bound with a paper slipcase. Designed, produced and bound by Chip Schilling. Printed offset by Lori Spencer at the Borowsky Center for Publication Arts in Philadelphia.

This book is about the psychology of addictive thinking. This accordion fold book is housed in a slipcase that suggests a carton of cigarettes. The first page of this circular book presents the reader/viewer with a question: “Open the door?” From there, you are guided down a path that makes its way through the brain into a room where a clue to understanding the book can be found in a Mad Magazine style fold-in. The text is a sampling of multiple-choice intelligence test questions that have more to do with associations than with reality. The answers to these questions are based on temporal associations, which have no right or wrong answer and may change with each successive reading. This book comes with a warning, “Consumption of this book may cause stress and anxiety.” The color scheme of the book was chosen to create the highest amount of anxiety according to the Lucher Color Theory test.

.

4 x 5"; 10 pages. Designed, printed and bound by Chip Schilling at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. The first book to be published under the Indulgence Press imprint. Denial is a walk down Hollywood Boulevard that trips into space and lands on Elvis Presley’s star.
