Some days I’d like to
turn the world
inside out and shake it
like a rug.

Today is one such day,
but the world will wait
while I sit
on my big blue chair

and eat a pickle.
A garnish,
never a side dish
a pickle will surprise you
every time.

Archimedes
By Mike Heffner
Mill Valley, California: Viking Dog Press / Claribel Cone, 2009.

Hahnemühle Biblio, drawings on Hahnemühle Bugra. Japanese stab binding.

Poetry by Mike Heffner accompanied by Claribel Cone paintings.

Mike Heffner: "The initial impetus was the ongoing work at The Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore on decoding The Archimedes Palimpsest... There are five paintings reproduced within the book to accompany the poems and each book in the edition of ten has an original painting as the front cover. The paintings are high energy and color-dense, evoking the spirit of the poems in a dramatic, bold, and masterful style. As covers on the books, they are stunning!"

Claribel Cone: "[The covers are] painted in geometric inks and gouaches. These beautiful papers are no longer made so it's a rare editional element! The paintings are inspired by Archimedes circles and Pie R squared explorations."

A Cuttlefish Compendium Cuttle
Portraits and Cuttle Quips
By Claribel Cone

It was completely dark in the Barcelona aquarium surrounded by low ledges of black velvet with small children streaming around a large brightly lit tank. There were maybe 90 octopuses floating among the fans and corals – all transparent with salmon pink and sky blue and lime green colored tubes and rills.

"One saw me and left his date to swim right up to the glass. He opened his zigzag shaped eye till it became a large floating orb – yes, he hypnotized me! ...

"Later I read a sign which informed me I had not been drawing octopus at all – this was a special Barcelona exhibition of romantic interlude cuttlefish, these romantic tango loving animals lurking and suspended in their coral dance halls...."
