cj grossman: "Sometimes I start a book based on materials, and I bought these great old-timey prescription boxes used way back before bottles were popularized. So I made this supreme valentine book where one person asks her/his valentine for everything including her heart. ("Hey V, give me some tea, some heat, your hat, your art," etc.) All the words come from the word 'heart.'"

Pet Book
By cj grossman
Berkeley, California: cj grossman, 2000. Edition of 3.
2.75 x 3"; 10 pages. Miniature. Accordion structure. Boards in the shape of a turtle.
cj grossman: "I have shown hundreds of schoolchildren this book, and they love it. So often, humans take one of a species as a pet – why? Because we can. But this book just hints at what it must be like for that little turtle, like many others, who is captured out of its own environment. When I was a child, we could go to a store and see dozens of little baby turtles for sale with their backs painted; I guess that was supposed to make them even more attractive. Undoubtedly most of them died, either due to the paint or the fact that most of the kids who bought them probably didn't know how to take care of them. On another note - with the advent of Kindle and other reading gadgets, probably we WILL all be looking at books as becoming "Pet Books" at some point in the future! (But I hope not...)."
