John Hastings, colophon: "The poem upon which this book is based was inspired by the menagerie our family had when I was growing up in Edmonds, Washington. We had no big game animals, of course, but we did have chickens, ducks, rabbits, white rats, fish, a goose, a turtle, a chameleon, a parakeet, a dog, and a cat. Alas, my accompany artwork lacks similar inspiration, and I am forced to admit that I continue to explore my early primitive period of drawing."

I guess my zoo was rather small.
It's all I could afford
For animals make big demands
In terms of room and board ...
