Cocktails with William Powell

By Mike Heffner
Mill Valley, California: Viking Dog Press / Claribel Cone, 2009. Edition of 10.

11 x 8.5"; 10 leaves. Printed on Hahnemühle iBugra paper. Japanese stab binding. Art deco paper wraps with paper title label tipped on.

This refreshing and whimsical collaboration of poetry and painting by Heffner and Cone is based on an imagined evening in old Hollywood. The book is accompanied by two broadsides with drink recipes: 'The William Powell Cocktail" and "The Carole Lombard Cocktail."

Mike Heffner: "Claribel and I recently had the pleasure of attending a cocktail party at our friend William Powell's house. ...I've written some poems about the guests in attendance and Claribel has painted pictures to accompany them. Cheers!"

William Powell & Carole Lombard
There was a commotion
out by the swimming pool
when William Powell,
(so debonair
I could never call him Bill)
arrived with Carole Lombard
on his arm and hand in hand,
impeccably dressed
they both jumped
in the pool.
