Rebecca Goodale: "This book unfolds to reveal a vernal pool with the four indicator species and a poem about mating season."

An indicator species is often the most sensitive species in the region and acts as a warning to monitoring biologists. The indicator species of the vernal Maine pool are fairy shrimp, blue salamanders and yellow spotted salamanders, and wood frogs.
