Variance / Invariance
By Judy Rushin and Jay Snodgrass
Tallahassee, Florida: Small Craft Advisory Press, 2013. Edition of 75.

8.5 x 11" closed; single fold broadside. Letterpress printed on French Butcher Extra White paper. Numbered.

Artist Judy Rushin partnered with the Facility for Arts Research at Florida State University for her project Variance / Invariance. Rushing created a system in which artworks are assembled, dismantled, and shipped in small boxes. This present work, also called Variance / Invariance is the instruction sheet that accompanied her art.

Judy Rushin: "Variance / Invariance is a participatory art project that uses abstract painting as pre-fab systems to create active art experiences. It is an extension of my desire to understand abstract painting by exploring a painting as something that can be intimately and collaboratively experienced by individuals in their own domestic spaces. By sharing my work privately with individuals and later in galleries and museums along with their shipping boxes, texts, and project documentation, this project is an experiment in cooperative design, alternative platforms for artistic engagement, while also an affirmation of the gallery’s role as a site for social discourse."

To accompany the Variance/Invariance kit sent to each participant, an instruction sheet was created by Judy Rushin and poet Jay Snodgrass.

Jar of Diamonds
By Jay Snodgrass and FSU Graduate Students
Tallahassee, Florida: Small Craft Advisory Press. Edition of 75.

8.5 x 11" closed; single fold broadside. Letterpress printed on Somerset satin papers. Enclosed in aqua envelope. Numbered.

Small Craft Advisory Press: "Jar of Diamonds was produced in commemoration of the opening of SCAP’s new home at the Facility for Arts Research (FAR). It is the second collaborative project between Bookwalter and Snodgrass. It explores the conceptual idea of making and how amazing things can come from very simple materials and places as mirrored in the theme of FAR."

FAR (Facility for Arts Research), Florida State University: "Jay Snodgrass is the author of two books of poetry, Monster Zero (poems about Godzilla) and The Underflower. He has collaborated with Denise Bookwalter on a variety of broadsides and envelope-chapbook projects including Concentrics, an accordion folded broadside, and Jar of Diamonds, an embossed broadside which is folded into an envelope. This work beautifully blends the delicate precision of letterpress, in ink and in text, with the possibility of language on the page in order to demonstrate that the creative process stems from the love of creating beautiful things by distilling emotions, and being honest, as much as it is arriving at a product to be distributed. Jay Snodgrass has generated texts for collaborative graduate and undergraduate book making projects at FAR, and enjoys working with students to help them explore and explode the possibilities of the creative process."
