East of Avalon
Poems by James Harms. A visual topography of abstract figures; a landscape of subtle hue and placement. Illustrations reflect the quiet, precise observation of the poems and sandwich the text, including title and colophon pages. Several pages at either end of the book are devoted to the images and function as approach and leave taking in the way that a deep beach borders the ocean. Turning those pages provides passage to and from the world of words that Harms has so carefully crafted. We do travel to another land, a land by sea, a time past but ever present as memory exists even now, informing each next moment. Letterpress from Neon Optima on Kayasuki, Minokichi, and Seikosen handmade, Japanese papers. Illustrations are printed from endgrain and acrylic blocks. Japanese paper over boards with exposed spine sewing over tabs. Edition of 54. (7.5 x 11.5 inches.) Effective fusion of text and image, exquisitely presented.
